Tamara Baker – AES Trainee of the Year

Leading Aboriginal employment organisation Aboriginal Employment Strategy ltd (AES) is proud to announce Ms Tamara Baker as the Trainee of the Year.

On Wednesday 28 May 2014 at the North Coast Institute of TAFE Student Recognition Awards in Coffs Harbour Ms Baker was recognised for her efforts as an AES School Based Trainee which is hosted by the local Westpac branch.

Ms Baker said “It is an amazing opportunity, with the support of my partner Jacob, my parents & grandparents, I have excelled in something I enjoy. I just want to thank my teacher Toni Shannon, AES Kempsey and the Kempsey TAFE. My parents are both exceptionally proud and said it was a good reflection of the hard work I had put in.”

Ms Di Paton, Associate Director for North Coast TAFE and convenor of the judging panel for Trainee of the Year said at the awards that “Tamara was outstanding in the field of nominees not only because of her initiative in making a significant life change at such a young age to pursue education, but also because of her passion for work and study was very evident”.

The AES pioneered School-based traineeships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Financial sector in 2002. Since then the program in partnership with ANZ and CBA, has grown to now involve over 30 of corporate partners across Australia, including NAB, Westpac, Telstra, Intercontinental Group, Kmart Tyre and Auto, Coates Hire, Westfields and Nine Entertainment Co.

These training awards are conducted annually to recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector. The awards honour and reward the achievements of students, trainers/teachers, training organisations, large and small employers.
